How does shoulder surgery work?
As shoulder surgery specialists in Freiburg we offer a broad range of arthroscopic and open shoulder operations. From the treatment of rotator cuff tears and shoulder instability through to arthritic changes – our experienced surgeons use the most modern techniques to restore the function and stability of the shoulder.
Most shoulder operations are carried out arthroscopically, that is, through small incisions using a camera and very fine instruments. These minimally invasive procedures allow precise treatment while putting little strain on the patient.
Depending on the indication, various procedures can be used: from a simple arthroscopy through a rotator cuff repair or Bankart repair to more complex procedures such as shoulder replacement or tendon reconstruction.
Rehabilitation after shoulder surgery
Rehabilitation after shoulder surgery is decisive for long-term success. Early mobilisation and targeted therapy are important in order to restore the movement and function of the shoulder.
Phase I (weeks 1 to 6): early mobilisation
The first phase of rehabilitation concentrates on restoring movement and reducing pain. Early passive and active-assisted mobilisation exercises are important.
Phase II (weeks 7 to 12): functional training
In the second phase the strength and co-ordination of the shoulder muscles are built up. Sport-specific exercises can be introduced slowly.
Phase III (from week 13): return to sport
In the final phase full loading is restored and the patient can return step by step to their usual activities.
