HYALURONIC ACID

Method
Injection of hyaluronic acid to lubricate the joint
Duration
10 to 20 minutes per injection
Course of treatment
3 to 5 injections at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of joint fluid and provides the lubrication and shock absorption of the joints. With osteoarthritis the amount of hyaluronic acid falls, which leads to pain and restricted movement. By injecting hyaluronic acid we can improve the function of the joint and relieve pain.

How does hyaluronic acid treatment work?

For hyaluronic acid treatment, a high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the affected joint. This substance acts as a natural lubricant for the joint and improves how well the joint surfaces glide. Hyaluronic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties and can support the regeneration of cartilage.

The treatment is carried out as a day case and is very well tolerated. The injection is given under sterile conditions and can be carried out under local anaesthetic where needed.

The effect of hyaluronic acid usually sets in within a few days and can last several months. The treatment is particularly effective with mild to moderate osteoarthritis and can delay the need for an operation, or even avoid it.

The number of injections depends on your individual symptoms. Typically 3 to 5 injections at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks are recommended. The effect can last for 6 to 12 months.

What we treat

Hyaluronic acid can be used successfully for a range of joint conditions. Our experienced doctors develop an individual treatment plan for every patient.

Osteoarthritis of the knee

With osteoarthritis of the knee, hyaluronic acid can relieve pain and improve movement. The treatment is particularly effective with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis of the hip

With osteoarthritis of the hip, the treatment can reduce pain and improve walking. The injection is given under X-ray guidance for the best possible precision.

Shoulder problems

With problems of the shoulder joint, hyaluronic acid can improve movement and relieve pain. Particularly effective with osteoarthritis and frozen shoulder.

Osteoarthritis of the ankle

With osteoarthritis of the ankle, the treatment can improve what the joint can cope with and reduce pain. The treatment supports the function of the joint.
